Hierarchical structure limits the number of communication paths in a project, while permitting effective communication among team members who need to communicate with one another. Hierarchical teams are particularly well suited to Development of hierarchical software products because each major subsystem in the hierarchy can be assigned to a different programming team. It has been observed on more than one occasion that the structure of software products tends to resemble the structure of the teams that develop them. If a hierarchical product is to have three major subsystems, it is reasonable to have three teams organized in hierarchical fashion, with each team leader reporting to the project leader. The number of immediate subordinates at each level in a hierarchy will be limited to five to seven people to permit effective communication and supervision of work activities. Thus, a large project may have several levels in the hierarchy.
