EMERGING TRENDS/CHALLENGES CROSS IS CONCERNED ABOUT:
Being on the threshold of the 21st century, the scenario for poor and the marginalised is quite bleak. Several factors supplementing and complementing each other are arrayed against the poor. The new economic policy, the resultant consumerism, invasion of multi national corporations: cuts uf subsidies and assistance for welfare programmes, the blitz of anti-poor advertisements indeed threaten the very lives of the poor. The unabated environmental degradation: pollution and unmindful exploitation of natural resources provides us a scenario with potentially grave consequences.
Add the goondaism, ever increasing poverty: insensitivityof the elite, helplessness of the unemployed, aged. vulgar display of wealth: declining faith in democratic institutions, one can get the most probable picture of the future. It is this likelihood which calls for a far more dedicated: sustained and purposeful action with the poor and marginalised to help them counter these anti-people forces and usher in a sustainable development process by themselves-
